“Uber” practical – your best cab ride in the city

If you live here you know about this daily life pain. If you are coming for a visit, be warned: It is a nightmare to find a taxicab when you most need it in the afternoon rush between 3:30 and 5 PM. That’s when they are all heading to Queens for a shift change.

My super app savvy friend told me yesterday about Uber: a private car service requested from your phone. I had to test it the same day. On the app, before you order, you can see in how many minutes the closest driver will arrive at your location. If you decide that’s ok, you get a text with confirmation of exact pick up time and driver’s name.

Our driver was really cordial, and his Lincoln extremely spacious and very clean, no funny town car smell, which can be a serious issue. Since your credit card stays on file, you don’t have to swipe anything, and tip is included. Ali, our friendly driver told me that that Uber started 8 months ago with a few cars, and now it has 175, most of them, like himself, dedicated to Uber full time.

I’m sold. I hereby declare the end of taxicab witching hour!

Saxon and Parole is on a roll

You’ve gotta be really alert to keep up with all the new eatery and bar openings on the Bowery. One of them is the newish Saxon + Parole, where Double Crown used to live (not very memorable). I’ve been there three times, just to make sure it’s consistently good, of course! Well, kudos to the chef and the staff. This is going to become my reliable neighborhood to-go restaurant. I usually arrive without a reservation, and that’s ok because I’m never snubbed by the hostess.

Old school bartenders: mega ice cube waiting to be chiseled

The restaurant is usually fully booked. That’s not an obstacle to me, since I’m a big bar-dining fan. Besides, the mixologists at S&P absolutely know their craft. They can prepare a delicious Aperol Spritz, my favorite drink.

The food is labeled American, and I recommend the fillet and the chocolate soufflé, which was delightful.

The Lion King - he deserves to eternally reign Broadway

The Lion King is one of my favorite shows ever. I must have seen it at least fout times already, and every time I’m captivated and enchanted by the music, the actors charisma, and mostly, the beauty of the production. The use of natural materials for the set and animal costumes (lots of leather, grasses, ropes, wood) just shows how thoughtful the work is behind the scenes. The colors and creative sets transports you to Africa’s jungle and desert. Tears might be part if the experience. With or without kids, this is an unforgettable Broadway spectacle for all.

Museum Lunches: The Wright at The Guggenheim

The lunch:

I wasn’t very hungry after a vertigo induced museum stroll around Maurizio Cattelan’s hanging lifetime oeuvre… but still, lunch at the Guggenheim’s The Wright, sounded just… you know. My friend, also feeling a bit dizzy after our rotating stroll staring up and down the museum’s void, wanted something light as well. We both had the calamari salad appetizer as our main, and were not disappointed. The small lunch allowed us to share a delicious pumpkin cheesecake with dulce de leche ice cream. The restaurant is smaller then I expected, but cozy, light and clean.

The exhibit:

There’s nothing conventional about this provocative artist, neither is the way his art is displayed. Perfect match: no chronological order, nor your standard way to see art. Nothing wrong with that. Besides the vertiginous feeling when you look down from the Guggenheim’s spiral walkway, the only other little thing that bothered me a bit were all the stuffed real dogs. I’ve seen plenty of large taxidermy animals, so many artists now do them, but puppy pets? What’s next? The hanging children or the old lady in the fridge? If he could, would he?

You really should see it for yourself, it is totally worth it and don’t forget to download the app, it was very useful at some point. Don’t read while walking, you might feel sick, and that would spoil your appetite… The Wright is totally worth a lunch or dinner.

Paris Theater in New York

It might be rainy, it might be cold in New York City, BUT: we’ll always have Paris… The charming movie theater called Paris is across the Plaza Hotel on 58^th Street and 5^th Avenue always brings interesting indies and foreign movies that the Mega Cine-plax-max’s out there won’t. It is indeed a trip, at least mentally, to a far away place.

This week I went on that journey twice, for two premieres (thanks to a good friend who works for the Weinstein company). I saw My Week with Marilyn and The Artist, both pristine motion pictures.

So you know, you can escape to Paris when New York City becomes too much.

My tip for a pleasant morning: stroll down West Broadway… First, stop and shop at one of the best curated stores I’ve ever been to (except Merci in Paris, as my Italian friend points out). Meet Treasure & Bond, a boutique that displays the best picks in home décor, accessories, and apparel for all.

The staff is always helpfully standing by, and curiously, 80% of them are green eyed girls who wear abundant mascara (I asked: Dior). So, not only are the sales ladies nice on the eyes, also friendly, no fuss here. Besides, you can count this as philanthropical retail therapy: 100% of their quarterly profits are donated to New York City's non-profits that help children in the NYC area.

After the delightful experience of browsing through beautiful things, you might get hungry. But before I give you my second tip, take a peek at Lumas next door.

Great concept: art photography from professionals around the world for affordable prices. Nicely mounted on acrylic frames.

Second stop: The Dutch, just a block north. Very friendly staff here as well. The delicious pork sandwich is practically devoured in a few seconds by any customer who orders it. “Is this from the same owner as Batlhazar?” my italian friend legitimately asks. Nope, not Keith McNally, but you could think so from the Pastis like (and all others) décor: white tiles, French bistro vibe, old mirrors, vintage lighting. The Dutch is co-owned by Locanda Verde’s Andrew Carmellini. Now that I do a little bit of research, The New York Times defines the athmosphere of one of Sam Sifton’s (their food critic at the time) as: “A Balthazar for Generations X and Y, a “21” Club for post-Reagan youth”, So, good eye, amica!

Free your fur coat from the mothballs. Fuzzy animal skin attire - faux or real - is ferociously loose on the streets of Manhattan! Be it on jackets, cardigan collars or mainly loads of sleeveless waistcoats, pelts are making a big comeback and can be found anywhere. To be clear, all photos on today’s post were taken with my i-Phone (as always) today!

Bloomingdales advertised a brand new “fur salon” department on a full-page ad in the New York Times today, and a few pages down, Macy’s announces a 40% off fur sale. Editorial ads for Chanel and Gucci also showcased pieces of fur. Century 21 on the Upper West Side has heir fur items on full display on the ground floor...

and on my way back home, wearing my furry muffler of course, I candidly photographed these stylish subway riders effortlessly looking chic wrapped in their fashionable harry coats.

Brazilian jewelry designer Camila Klein, who flew in from Sao Paulo for just one night to launch her new collection this week. One of her creations on a mannequin wearing Carlos Miele

Brazilians celebrities and stylish guests were sparkling amongst Swarovski crystals at the brand’s flagship store on Broadway this week during a lively party celebrating the recently published photo book: Brazilian Style by Phaidon. Aside the glitzy A-Listers, what bedazzled me the most was the amount of actual bling showcased along the walls of the this two story, two-year old Austrian concept jewelry store. At the so-called Swarovski Crystallized store (there are only three in the world), shoppers can design and customize their own necklaces, charm bracelets, and earrings.

The customized pieces are made to order and mailed within two weeks. Since last June, Café Kristall, located at the end of the shop, was incorporated to the shop and serves a true café Viennese,a mogst other Austrian delicatessen. Be it for refreshments only or crystal shopping ,this is good stop for your SoHo exploratory walks. Who knows, maybe you’ll even feel inspired and create your own shiny necklace.

My eyes wide open at Sleep No More

The other night I felt lost in an abandoned hotel with a mask on my face, tapping in the dark, following a half naked lady up and down the stairs, through a ball room surrounded by large evergreens , up to a mezzanine library, through a closet that opened into a Versailles-like bedroom. The taxidermy décor spooked me out a little bit, but once I found the candy pharmacy, where I was free to take whatever I wanted from the glass containers, I was happy like a child! I never woke up from that haze, because this was not a dream.

And that’s all I will give away from this incredible and unforgettable experience that has been written and raved about so much in the media (read the New York magazine article here). If you see one performance this year, don’t miss Sleep No More by the cast of Punchdrunk, a British site-specific theater company. Lucky for us, and a perfect Halloween outing, extended showings until November…

Cider in the City

Local orchard s featuring a taste of their apple spirit before Cider Week at a stand in the farmer's market in Union Square

At this time of year we see apples galore around here. What I didn’t know is that New York State is the second highest producer of apples in the nation. No wonder an organization found a good way to market the fact and create fun events around it, including the upcoming Cider Week, from October 16^th-19^th. We are talking about real distilled cider here, not the Whole Foods plastic bottle variety. To kick off the festivities, a cider bar and panel discussion will take place at the New Amsterdam Market starting at 11am on Sunday. Over 60 restaurants, including The Spotted Pig, Boqueria, John Dory, Eataly, DBGB and Gramercy Tavern, will be serving sophisticated concoctions (think pommeau and calvados) of apple brew derived from more than a hundred varieties of cider apples. Who knew, always absorbing, in this case ingesting, something new in the Big Apple.

The Hudson Hotel: still going strong after all these years

With so many offerings of places to go, it is rare that anybody would repeat visiting the same venue within the same week. I did. Twice in a row was I enjoying the evening end of summer breeze at the “Private Park” of the Hudson hotel. This is not a hot spot nor a cool location (midtown west) however, this 10 year old hotel is consistently attractive, and welcoming. I had not been in many years, but ended up there Monday night for the after party of the movie premier “I don’t know how she does it” with Sarah Jessica Parker (fun flick worth seeing). And then again I went back last night, when I needed a last minute reservation for seven people –kind of a challenge on a Thursday evening. I wanted something were we could meet for a drink and then have dinner, without a crazy wait or hassle. And the Hudson was perfect for it. You can have drinks at the charming library, or outside at the beautifully planted terrace. When hunger strikes, the restaurant is right there, with its delicious “self-service” gourmet food. The tuna tartar also worth a repetition.

Cipriani Wall Street: a classy respite from the markets’ folly

Bankers know where to go for a deliciously decadent italian lunch. They head to the subtle entrance of Cipriani Club 55. If you’re in a hurry, or gazing at the skyscrapers above, you will pass it. Step away (and up a flight of stairs) from the grimy grey streets of the financial district into this luxurious oasis that feels a bit like a pleasurable discovery. The dark woods, tasteful art and elegant setting all around whisks you away from the madness that goes down a few steps away in the NY Stock Exchange hall. Brava Eataly! Best customer service

A little bit of humor gets you a long way. With this note, how can you be grumpy even after a long line?

Kudos to Eataly on the frantic Saturday shopping day pre-hurricane. Before New Yorkers knew that Irene would be a somewhat disappointing wash, everyone packed up like crazy on survival supplies. Water was sold out in several supermarkets, and the check-out lines were long. The mood had that excitement in the air, “we are too cool to freak out, but something is about to happen, let’s not overreact, but still, better safe than sorry, let’s horde on pantry essentials – just in case”.

I decided to shop at my favorite purveyor, - why loose style just because of an imminent weather catastrophe. Eataly was packed, at the entrance everyone was told by the door guard that the lines were 45 minutes. OK. I faced it and it wasn’t even that bad, maybe 25 minutes tops. But the best was the service! Basically, instead of 300 workers, they had 30, according to a manager. And still, while back office staff and managers were at the cashiers and some stations were closed, everything went smoothly and I got all the goodies I needed to spend a very gastronomical and comfortable cooking Sunday while Irene blasted outside.

Eataly has three restaurants and a bar with it’s own brewery on the rooftop. Don’t miss out on this Italian territory in the middle Manhattan on your next visit.

Street Art: Flaming Cactus on Astor Place

This morning as I walked out the front door I stumbled onto the lamp post outside my building and had to smile – and actually touch it! Ah those NY moments. The colorfully decorated column was the same lamp post I had embarrassedly bumped into once (not my fault - it is perfectly in your way if you are running trying to hail a passing cab as soon as you step onto the sidewalk – you know what I mean?). Well that would not have happened today, since the neon orange zip ties that hug the post would have certainly flashed in my peripheral vision., that’s how colorful they are. What a great idea!! Looking closer I found the information on a paper hanging at the bottom of the posts.

The “Flaming Cactus” installation is by the Animus Arts Collective and commissioned by the City. Fluorescent plastic cable ties will bedeck fourteen lampposts in the East Village. At least five are on my block, lucky me. Great example of those small surprises that pop up in our routine that make this city so exciting to live in. Thank you Animus Arts Collective and the city’s Department of Transportation for an unexpected dose of animation to my morning!

For almost a month now, New York gay couples and proponents of gay rights have been rejoicing the bill passed in the Senate that allows same sex marriage in the state. Now there’s something else to celebrate: Parkview Developers announced today the creation of New York’s first officially gay hotel: THE OUT NYC - set to open this fall.

Here are the facts at a glimpse:

· Located on 42^nd Street between 10^th and 11^th Avenues

· 105-room boutique hotel

· 11,000 square foot nightclub by John Blair, Beto Sutter, and FV Events

· 24/7 café and restaurant called KITCHEN

· First phase of the project is set for completion in the fall of 2011

THE OUT NYC will host various types of function space to accommodate everything from intimate private dinners to large events and weddings. The building will be centered on three courtyards and a 5,000 square foot wellness center. And not need to feel left out. This is a "straightfriendly" hotel. I thought that's just really cool.

But if you are a novelty hunter like me, who's always scouting the latest and super curious about the new inventions this insatiable city has to offer, i have an insider tip for you: the Z New York Hotel. If you have not heard of it it's probably because it officially opens TODAY!

The Book of Mormon musical on Broadway

While the big theater critics and stars where attending the official opening of the expensive and controversial Spider Man- Turn off The Dark, I was a couple blocks away laughing out loud, practically peeing in my pants at the Broadway show The Book of Mormon.

No matter where you come from in this world, you probably have seen a Mormon team in your neighborhood. The ding-dong duo goes from door to door to disseminate the teachings of Christ (according to their own) and are distinguishable from other missionaries by their white shirts, black pants, black name tag and gel in the hair… (ok, maybe I’m going to far with the last part). In terms of stereotyping, writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the comic masters at this show which won nine TONYs last week.

Two thumbs up. Word of advice: don’t go if you can’t take blasphemy or heavy satire on religious dogma. This is after all the an oeuvre of the South Park creators.

The post-Memorial Day pilgrimage out east has started and you know you'll be stuck on the Long Island Expressway. Focus on the positive: besides the beach, freshly renovated hotels, new shops and novel restaurants are awaiting you in the Hamptons.

The Capri Hotel was newly sold (together with its sisters the Atlantic and Bentley) to Jackie Mansfield (W Miami) and will house another one of sushiman’s Nobuyuki Matsuhira empire outpost. After a face-lift overseen by Meyer Davis Inc, with touches from business partner Steven Kamali (from the successful Surf Lodge in Montauk), a table is are already an impossible feat to achieve. Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley will add her chic perspective to the interiors as well as to her own boutique, adjacent to the hotel’s lobby. According to the company’s press release: “Rowley’s fashion-forward aesthetic will be seen in décor details within the Capri’s rooms, as well as in the Nobu restaurant, and an expansive poolside and event area, entitled The Bathing Club. With a sun-soaked indoor/outdoor lobby, oversize beach pillows and deck beds, and antiqued wood floors in each guestroom, the Capri’s aesthetic seeks to echo the relaxed, rustic atmosphere of its beachside property, yet provide a level of luxury and sophisticated service that is in tune with the Hamptons visitor. The Southampton boutique, the designer’s seventh U.S. retail location, follows last summer’s Montauk store, which is open yearly from Memorial Day through to the fall.”

Birreria at Eataly: Preview

My weekly morning caffe at Eataly has become a tradition, and I feel more and more like a professional navigator in the labyrinth of Italian gourmet goodies. Today I found the secret door to the top of Batali’s empire. Not only did I find, it, I was actually guided though it by one of the chef’s partners, Adam Saper. It was one of those coincidences. After chatting at the coffee counter, we realized that we had worked together 12 years ago on the same project. I asked if I could see the rooftop Bierreria, which was previewed to the press last night and voila, the secret space was unveiled. Eater.com has posted last night’s party pictures this morning.

Today the retractable ceiling was closed, and staff was working and holding meetings there to get everything ready to officially inaugurate on or around June 3^rd. The Birreria is a brewery/bar/restaurant occupying 8,000 square feet of prime penthouse space with a good view to the Empire State. According to Eater, there will be three beer types brewed on the premises, as well as a full bar and menu, seating up to 200. Stay tuned, for if when those plastic curtains are drawn, the show will begin. Ride up the elevator, then take the stairs with Dante’s Inferno quotes printed on the stair raisers to arrive at this little piece of cielo on earth.

Phaidon and James Beard Beard Foundation Greens celebrate The Silver Spoon

Organized by the James Beard Foundation Greens, the occasion is a celebration of the classic The Silver Spoon recipe book, the bible of authentic Italian cooking and Italy's best-selling cookbook for the last fifty years. BOULUD SUD

With so many restaurants in New York - Daniel, DBGB, Bar Boulud, Cafe Boulud - it is difficult to get excited over yet another opening. But all it took was one night of tasting Boulud Sud's menu from start to finish to conclude that the man did it again. The most French chefs, serving babaganoush and Tabouleh with mint and parsley? Yes, and both unbelievably good! He says Sud serves Mediterranean cuisine, a super vague term that enables the menu to hop along Valencia, Greece, Provence, Tunisia and Lebanon.
The robust and tasty cuisine and efficient service à la française are tops. The bland décor, not so much...

Epicerie Boulud
Nextdoor to Boulud Sud, this chic shop serves breakfast and lunch (including several hot sandwiches, like hot dog and a fancy crab roll. Assouline at The Plaza Hotel

Lady of elegance Lucia van de Post wrote a lovely piece on Assouline’s latest store recently opened in London’s Liberty in this weekends FT’s “How to Spend It” magazine – read here. The article perfectly captures the essence of being in one of the publishers seven venues worldwide, and also inspired me to finally revisit my own impressions, and highly suggest a visit at Assouline’s New York’s bookshop.

The photos you see here were taken a while ago when Oscar Niemeyer’s collectors book first came out together with his signature bookstand…The store is on the west mezzanine above The Plaza Hotel’s lobby. Just the location in itself already provides a special atmosphere of timelessness to the experience. To me, it’s like stepping into a capsule where time stands still and where it’s safe to browse and loose oneself amongst the shelves of this this classy library filled with gorgeous books, tasteful gifts and a pair of extremely chic (and comfy) chairs.

Be it a respite from the outside bustle or just a quick stop to get something beautiful, a visit to the Assouline shop is always a pleasure.

Tip: after immersing in the delight of the written world, satisfy your human cravings with a delicious snack at Todd English's Food Plaza in the basement of the The Plaza.

Mastiha is the “world’s first chewing gum” according to the nice salesman at the first US branch of the Greece chain with shops all over Europe. The emphasis in this food and beauty products shop is on mastiha, a resin extracted from a tree bark that has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities. This apparently miraculous ingredient is used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and foods. All readily available at the store.

You know what? I just thought of this…: we masticate gum right? I bet the verb masticate (= chew) comes from mastiha. I guess more things date back to the Greek than what we think!!

Opened a few months ago and designed to feel like a typical island sidewalk café, this little corner is a charming cliché of the stone white traced floors, blue shutters and bougainvillea. The simple and yummy menu is irresistible and as satiating as it’s original meat/pita/tzatziki sauce sandwiches sold on the popular Souvlaki trucks around town.

2001 Street fashion summer preview: truly short shorts

On the first warm day of the year a couple of weeks ago, Manhattan sidewalks were packed with short shorts. I mean really SHORT. I had to squint a few times at glaring white legs that were reflecting sunlight. Street wear pre-announces trends and usually differs from what you see in the display windows. In fact, long skirts are being declared by silent mannequins overlooking the bare legged ladies strutting by, showing off their... lack of a tan. I can only hope for lots of sun. At least I expect that the massive evident cellulite will be less visible if the all these exposed thighs take in a little bit of color :)

How to help Japan

These are troubled times. Not wanting to go into the debate about America’s meddling in the Middle East (again) – I’m thinking about the catastrophic events in Japan. We are here, going on about our lives, sitting in front of our computers, ordering our groceries online and clicking away trying to score the best reservation at opentable.com.

Walking around NYC though, I’m happy to notice reminders about how we can help the ones that are not. This week I went to Uniqlo and Ippudo, and saw that they are organizing drives and donations for the victims in Japan. Granted, both are Japanese, but still… I also received an email that SoulCycle will donate $1of every ride tomorrow to help those affected by the quake and tsunami throughout the Pacific. And my daughters school is also calling for action with donations to the Red Cross.

Too make it even easier for the us,- the lucky bastards gawking at the screen -, here’s a link to help those who are in a situation we can not even imagine:
